Mary Condren at WATER

Tuesday after work Ginnie from church took Emma and I to Silver Spring for a meeting of WATER - the Women's Alliance for Theology, Ethics and Religion. They were featuring a guest speaker from Ireland, Mary Condren, Director of The Institute for Feminism and Religion in Ireland, Teacher at Trinity College, Dublin (Centre for Gender and Women's Studies), and author of The Serpent And The Goddess: Women, Religion And Power In Celtic Ireland. She was a marvelous speaker who described her book as the story of the rise of patriarchal ideas in Ireland. She spoke of the early legends and myths of Bridget and talked about the changed perspective - from the idea of celebrating life to a celebration of the dead (from wombs to tombs). She used the term colonized a different way - a combination of conquered and co-opted. She was a fascinating speaker and I only wish I had known more of her before I heard her speak, tho her book has been reprinted and is available through Amazon. I'm hesitant to write more as any reduction of her words takes from the richness of tradition and ritual.

21st Century Schizoid PM?

From the Diary of Robert Fripp ... (May 7, 2003)

" …from the London Evening Standard, in the Londoner's Diary column …
Tony Blair's old friend and Ugly Rumours sidekick Mark Ellen told this morning's Today programme that the PM gets away from it all by listening to a song by 1970s prog-rockers King Crimson called 21st Century Schizoid Man. It's not the Londoner's idea of rest and recuperation. A typical verse runs: "Blood rack barbed wire/Politician's funeral pyre/Innocents raped with napalm fire/21st Century Schizoid Man" "

And speaking of Political leaders
from The Long Logweb
Some slumber parties get advertised all over the world. Looks like the advertising for this one got a bit out of hand...

Lauren Hutton (from the early Show)

from the Media Research Center MRC analyst Brian Boyd caught Hutton's comments made during an 8:30am half hour segment with Early Show quad-host Renee Syler to promote Hutton's "Good Stuff" line.

Several minutes into the May 1 interview Syler asked Hutton if enough attention is being paid to woman as we age?

Hutton replied: "I'm saying look your best and then you start feeling your best and you'll say anything. And we need women saying everything now-"
Syler: "Is it discouraging though-"
Hutton: "-because we got a ten and a half million square mile hole in the sky and the big nuke is the sun. That's the big nuke. That's what the boys better watch out for."
Rene Syler: "That's a whole other point about skin protection, but let me ask you this-"
Hutton: "No, women in government."
Syler: "I thought you were talking about ozone-"
Hutton: "Girls cleaning the house, the earth."
Syler: "-ozone and protecting your skin with sunscreen?"
Hutton: "Governments everywhere are men and it is ancient and insane and shameful."
Syler: "But let me-"
Hutton: "We've got to have half and half. That's how God made us, otherwise there's only one of us and probably us. But God knows we wouldn't have come up with bridges or airplanes or lots of stuff. You know, boys have great vision and they're fun in bed. But, so there's certain, fine things for them. It's true. I've been both places. I prefer men."
Syler: "I knew this was going to be an interesting interview. But listen, please, let me just ask you one more question..."

Ah Lauren ... we love you for all of that - and more!

the Polygeek Quiz (Better late than never!)

You are 39% geek
39% Geek Girl Image
You are a geek liaison, which means you go both ways. You can hang out with normal people or you can hang out with geeks which means you often have geeks as friends and/or have a job where you have to mediate between geeks and normal people. This is an important role and one of which you should be proud. In fact, you can make a good deal of money as a translator.
Normal: Tell our geek we need him to work this weekend.

You [to Geek]: We need more than that, Scotty. You'll have to stay until you can squeeze more outta them engines!

Geek [to You]: I'm givin' her all she's got, Captain, but we need more dilithium crystals!

You [to Normal]: He wants to know if he gets overtime.

Awesome Underground Radio! (on the web!)

An old friend had been raving to me about a webradio service and the quality of their classic radio feed. I finally plugged it in the browser, popped on the headphones and ... wow. Classic underground Radio ...
Old Stooges, MC5, Steppenwolf (Rock me, baby) Quicksilver Messenger Service (Mona), TRex (the motivator), Tull (from Standup) ... these are not the usual Clear Channel "Classic Rock" hits - this is a wonderfully varied feed of hits and lessers ... Real rock radio!! Thank you Steven!

http://www.3wk.com
When you get to the main web page, look on the top left side for the Click to Listen button. Click it and you'll get a small popup window with two columns.
The left is 3WK Undergound - which is indie music feed. The right column is
3WK Classic underground radio. Anyway, you'll be asked what player you use - Ms-Player or Real Audio. From there the music just streams and what a line-up they have!

Oh - it also seems to get through our firewall, router, WebSense and all those filters at work!
