The Web Gal: Musical Index!

Now Playing: "Exiles" - by King Crimson

I was into Eno before Eno was cool ...

My tastes in music are pretty wide-ranging ... to give you an idea, I just started a list of the CDs in my music collection (but so far, its just a start!)

Latest news!   I just inherited a big box of 78s from my mom. Most of it is unknowns (to me) but there is a copy of Besame Mucho and a few other things I recognize. Now the fun part will be to find a way to play them and listen to these orignals.

This UK site has some helpful information about playing back old recordings.

More extensive info can be found here.

The folks of Esoteric Sound in Illinois have some equipment available.

Nauck's Vintage Records has free software to create a custom Strobe Disc to check/set your turntable speed at 78rpm, 80rpm, or whatever you need.

The Blaze Audio website has info on how to copy your old recordings into your computer (under Windoze).

The MasterDigital website has more extensive info on contemporary playback of vintage discs and capturing old recordings in digital.

There's a lot of buzz about icelandic band Sigur Ros - visit their website, listen to some of their songs and see what you think. Its music with a lot of space in it - my favorite kind!

Lately I've been playing the heck out of Banco de Gaia ... a techno trance mix out of the UK ... it grew out of listening to Moby, followed with Paul Oakenfold, etc ...

I recently heard some wonderful local musicians - click here for info and photos of Cliff Art

I heard about them from a local e-group for King Crimson fans, the DC-ET Group.

I've been listening to a lot of Cocteau Twins - great back sound when you're coding! My tip for newbies is to get a copy of Blue Bell Knoll (1988 - 4AD Records), its a great place to start
. Also track down some of the other work vocalist Liz Frazier has done - "Song of the Siren", "This Love" (from the Craig Armstrong album), and her work on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack.

I'm also stuck on "The Legendary Pink Dots" - CanTa MhenTras Puedas
(spanish for "Sing while you may") Its the only thing I found at the local Tower by them, its an anthology of their music from 1990-95, but I am looking for more ...
very nice electronic trance type music ...

David Sylvian had a new release in 2002 - after 10 years of quiet ... Dead Bees on a Cake - its quite nice, but I still prefer his earlier "Secrets of the Beehive", or the mostly out-of-print "Damage", a live collaboration with Robert Fripp

Another interesting find was the CD "Gedida" by Natacha Atlas. Her voice is wide-ranging and beautiful; the album is a blend of Middle Eastern vocals and trance-dance music from artists all over the world.

I also heard some of the classical music of Orlando Lassus on NPR one day - stunningly beautiful!   Its "chant music" - but nothing like the Gregorian chant you've heard before ... this has sweet harmonies & is very soothing and peaceful.
Look for "Lassus" - performed by The Hilliard Ensemble - its on the ECM label

Or perhaps you are more attuned to The Penguin Cafe Orchestra Alas - poor Simon Jeffes died on December 11th, 1997.

A great resource is The Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock (The GEPR);

I've also been listening to artists such as Silly Wizard, Enya and Clannad, Richard Thompson, Van Morrison, Howlin' Wolf and Ry Cooder, Miles Davis, Josh Redmon, and Dexter Gordon.   Here's some links to:   Eno, Happy Rhodes,   Gentle Giant,   The Mermen,   Phil Manzanera   The Orb,   Roxy Music   David Sylvian,   and Elephant Talk - the Robert Fripp & King Crimson Fan site, and a link to Discipline Global Mobile & Mr. Fripp!   The Artist Shop is a cooperative CD & music store for artist owned and independent labels.

I'm a big fan of progressive music - click here to visit WRNR-FM, the premiere Progressive Radio station in Annapolis, Maryland

CDs were supposed to help music cost less and sound better, but the cost of music just keeps rising, tho the Artists aren't getting a bigger share than they did in the days of $8 vinyl LPs ... Read SHINY, ALUMINUM, PLASTIC, AND DIGITAL by Negativland

Hey - didja ever considered that "the Music Industry" is just a few notches above child molesters? Don't believe me? Read an unedited transcript of Courtney Love's speech to the Digital Hollywood online entertainment conference, given in New York on May 16 from Salon.com.

"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic
hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs.
There's also a negative side."
